These children are among the first arrivals, and not knowing that they had other complaints than weakness from want, they were taken into the old Asylum, but the fever broke out among them in five days after admission from the effects of which, one died and the rest are scarcely recovered.
__Was put out to Nurse at 5/- per week.
__Returned to Sheds August 4th 1847 of his own account.
It will be noticed that among the Girls many are of an age which at first sight might be deemed inadmissible to an Orphan Asylum, but in fact they are all greater objects of compassion than the very young children from their state of debility and utter helplessness.
As soon as recovered so as to enable them to work, they will be placed out as servants. As a proof of their helplessness when admitted they were not only unable to wash and attend the young children, but could not perform those duties for themselves.
Without friends or money, they must have either perished in the streets, or become victims of a worse fate.

Ann McCord,
Secretary.

Semi-monthly Return of Roman Catholic Orphan Children in charge of His Lordship the Roman Catholic Bishop of Montreal, and partly maintained at the expense of Government under the Minute in Council of the 12th July 1847.
(two lists of Boys and Girls containing many of the same names have been merged into one file - the lists comprise children who arrived prior to 15th September, many still present on the 15th October - any notation regarding date of arrival, date of death, or date of departure from the orphanage is noted in the Remarks column - some are listed twice as a result - a note states: "They have neither father nor mother.")
