Donagh Cemetery

GRAVESTONE INSCRIPTIONS IN DONAGH CEMETERY

Co. Monaghan.

Donagh was a chapel in the medieval parish of Drumully with the family of O???Dunain as erenagh. In plantation papers the name is written Donoghmoyline and Donoghmoyclinne. In the Annals of Ulster it is called Domhnach Magh-da-claine, apparently a reference to a plain with two slopes. The identification of Domnach Magh-da-claoine with Donagh in Co. Monaghan in Onomastican Goedelicum is incorrect. Canon McKenna also connects certain references with Donagh of Co. Monaghan that really belong to the Donagh with which we are here concerned.

There is much to be learned from the inscriptions about local family names. MacDonnchaidh appears to be the original version of MacDonogh and Donaghy. This family began with Donnchadh Ceallach Maguire who died in 1476 and was the first of his name to make his mark in Clankelly. Breen was O???Breen; Collins was Collon, ???indicating O???Coileain; Bigan is the earliest spelling of Beggan; Kery and Kerry are the earliest form of Carey of to-day. Names that have disappeared locally are Sharkey, Morris or Morish, Money and Winey. Mohan is still very common and represent Muinter Mhuchaidhen who are mentioned in A.U. in 1500.

The oldest dated stone (1700) is in Latin. It is partly indecipherable but enough can be read to reconstruct the inscription. Translated it is: ???Here lies the body of Brigid Kieran, alias Weldon, who died 10 April, 1700, in the 20th year of her age.??? Weldon is here a corruption of Muldoon.

The headstones of two Penal-day priests are here listed---Rev. Patrick Kiran, O.P., Prior of Gola, died 1747, and Rev. Feliz Mulligan, parish priest of Drumully, who died in 1753.
