Marriage Certificates
Civil Registration of marriages was introduced in Ireland as
follows:
Protestant Marriages from 1st January 1845
Catholic Marriages from 1st January 1864
"What can I learn from a marriage certificate"?
A full marriage certificate is a "certificated"
copy of an original entry in a Register of Marriage.
It tells you the following:
The exact date of the marriage
The name of the Church and Parish in which the
marriage took place
The religious denomination.
The full name,age,occupation and home address of the
groom
The full name,age,occupation and home address of the
bride.
The name, occupation and address of both the
groom’s father and the bride’s father.
The names of the two witnesses.
Note that in some cases age is simply given either as
"of full age" or "over 21"
What do I receive:
You receive a full copy of the original, certified by the local District Registrar.
