The following inscriptions appear on headstones in Acton Graveyard. The graveyard is no longer in regular use and only a handful of burials have taken place there in the last fifty years. Like many old graveyards, it presents an untidy appearance of humps and hollows, making it virtually impossible to plot the precise location of any grave.
While records of a church in this graveyard exist only from the 17th century, there is reason to believe that it may have been a religious site well before that, and some authorities suggest that it is possibly of early Celtic origin. Outlines of the wall of Sir Toby Poyntz's Church of the Holy Trinity are recognisable, as is the entrance to the vault where he is said to be buried.
Members of the Local History Society spent several evenings recording the inscriptions as far as possible. There are a number of broken slate headstones of which only fragments could be found, and several massive marble and granite stones have fallen "face down" and would require very considerable work to raise them upright even to read them. During the work of recording, a considerable number of headstones were discovered lying flat and completely overgrown by moss and debris, often to a depth of more than six inches. These were cleared and recorded but there are probably others which were not found.

Sacred to the memory The Reverend Johnathon Lovett Darby For many years incumbent of the Parish of Acton Who died March (??) 1858 Aged 58 years He was remarkable for his truthfulness and simplicity of his character, for his humility and great kind heartedness, qualities which gained for him the affectionate regard of his parishioners to whom he was sincerely attached for 24 years. He lived among them as their pastor, and was always found ready to sympathise with those who were in sorrow, to encourage and assist those who were disheartened or in distress. Death came upon him suddenly but it brought no terror in its train for his trust was in the merit of his Saviour, and so he feared no evil but calmly and with gentle thoughts for all he loved on earth laid himself down to rest. This monument is erected to his memory by his wife Ann Catherine Derby
"Thou has formed us for thyself, O Lord, and our hearts are disquieted within us until we find our rest in thee."
