|
|
Hi Everyone
I am just enquiring if anyone knows of anything regarding the heritage of the name Reaney. I understand there are many in Northern Ireland and the Republic with variants of Reyney, Rainey and possibly Raine ( Cole-Raine? ).
It is understood the name is of Yorkshire origins ( Norse or Celtic ) and then Scotland ( Lanarkshire, Dumbarton ), then Ireland.
The Author PH Reaney comes from the small town in Sheffield where the name is supposed to originate. Though, some say the name is Norman from renyald-reynolds, rennie etc
If anyone could help out it would be great.
Thanks |

Hello
RAINEY
Also Rainy and Rannie and Rennie
Origins in Ulster : 17th century Plantation Scottish
Rainey and the variant spellings are pet forms of Reynold a spoken form of Reginald.
The Raineys and Rennys were extensive land owners in the district of Craig in Angus from the middle of the 15th century. The family can also be found in Stirling, Dunfreiss, and East Lothian.
"Reaney" of course may be an entirely different name. There is I beleive a book on the origins of English names written by a man called Reaney or Reanie
best regards

Thank you very much for your help. I didn't know that about the landowners in Craig.
I do know the DUP member Derek Reaney is from Tyrone and operates a Ulster-Scot organisation which gave me the idea the name maybe of the Scottish origin.
It appears to be a hard name to trace as we are from the Republic and come from a Catholic background. |

I have also found a record that shows a William Reaney & Margaret Reaney from Killalla, County Mayo who baptised a daughter called Margaret in the local parish church. A Church of Ireland church under Rev Josiah Hern. 1772.
if anyone has any info on these people it would be great as I feel they may have arrived from Northern Ireland |

I'm researching "Raineys", hither, thither & yon, past and present, for a compendium entitled "Rainey Legends, Lore and Legacy". I would be interested in your Rainey story, family history, pictures and genealogy as far back as you know; basically, the who, what, when, where and why of your Rainey line. I’m more interested in the human story rather than strictly the bare family tree and census data.
What's in it for you? - Acknowledgement as a contributor and a CD of the composite result. The current manuscript is over 500 pages and growing, including over 50 profiles, with history back to the origins of the Rainey surname.
I will e-mail current table of contents upon request.
Please send material in MS Word and pictures in .jpg (or compatible), as attachments to an e-mail to:
gordlrainey@rogers.com.
The main objectives are bonding, inspiration and educational. Thanks in advance for participating.
Cheers....Gord |
