Doing research on the Samuel Carson/Martha Hemphill family from Lisconnan, also the Thomas Carson/Martha McLaughlin family from Priestland/Ballyrock/ Ballybogey. On the other side of the family I'm researching the McMullans/McMillans, Glass, Beers families from the Bushmills, Lisbelnacroagh, Ballintoy area. I welcome any enquiries.....Jennifer Carson Turner

Hello Anne,

I suggest you add some more detail such as showing each family by place and date.

This will give you a better chance of getting a reply.

Where would I post for queries on people living in Dundalk? It is in the Louth area.

Thanks.

It might be an idea to sart with a Google search for something like County Louth Family History Societies. I have had success just entering the names of the people and where from when I was looking in Google. There are hundreds of websites with information but you need to be careful which you choose as a lot of them are expensive and of dubious value.

Hello,

This is my first post and I am "searching". For a name. For a needle in a haystack, it seems.

The name is "Gantt" and it is my surname. I can find it in the USA in South Carolina (my home), North Carolina, Maryland, Ohio, Texas and other places which conform to the Ulster-Scots migrations into America.
I believe my ancestry to be of the Ulster-Scots, but as yet have no tangible proof.

So, if anyone could tell me of the name "Gantt", or even where to look for it, I would be most appreciative.

Thank you very much.

Does anyone know what a Hacklesetter is ? I think it may relate to the linen trade.

A Hackle Setter must be a "carder" for the linen trade very similar to the carding of sheep wool.

The Hackler Combed or "carded" the coarse flax, using a hackle which was a toothed implement used in linen making.

My daughter cards sheep wool with two toothed paddles and ties it into loops very similar to the hackled flax. This step must be completed before spinning.

Hi Joanne,

19th century "hacklers" must have had a fierce reputation for being aggressive !
.
The modern word "heckler" as in someone who shouts abuse at a public speaker derives from "hackler" !!

best regards
Robert

I bet you are right. A person would want to run fast.

I would not want a wool carder to chase me with one of their hand held carding brushes. They could cut you up quickly. When we stored them, they were face to face so you did not touch the sharp wire points.
