1834 Emigrants

Transcribed from the 1834 Ordnance Survey Memoires Vol 22

The following is a list of names of the various persons who have emigrated through the Port of Londonderry to America during the years 1833 and 1834

It will show the age religion and townlands where each person resided and the port they emigrated to.

All are recorded as being Presbyterians unless otherwise recorded.

There was a high volume of Presbyterians leaving the north of Ireland at this time primarily due to the Tithe Aplotment Act{Land tax imposed by the Established Church} and the ending of leases issued pre 1800 for which the landlords were now asking  exorbitantly high rents to renew.

The poorer tenant farmers chose to leave. They had little choice.

There are Tyrone and north Londonderry people recorded among them
